Photographers must adjust their aperture, shutter speed, and ISO (collectively, exposure settings) to produce an image that is not too light (overexposed) or too dark (underexposed). With a proper exposure, there is a full range of tones from light to dark, detail in the highlights and shadows, and good image color. Exposure settings can also be used for creative effect — using a fast shutter speed can freeze motion, while using a slow shutter speed can produce an artistic blur. A wide aperture (large lens opening) is used to limit the image area, from front to back, that appears sharp (this can make the subject stand out); a narrow aperture (small opening) is used to record everything the lens “sees” as tack-sharp. With judicious use of these controls and, in some cases, the introduction of flash to bring up the light levels, photographers have the tools needed to craft powerful portraits and capture the majesty of nature.

Throw your preconceptions about light-painting out the window and prepare for a creative journey that will revolutionize your photography. Light painting is a classic photography technique that involves selectively illuminating sections of a dark subject by moving a light source (like a flashlight) over the subject during the course of a seconds- or minutes-long exposure. This results in uniquely nuanced depictions with a high level of technical artistry.

The success of a photograph depends on more than the subject. For big impact, the photographer must finesse every visual element at their disposal to communicate with the viewer. In the right hands, lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curving, radiating, and converging) draw viewers’ eyes through the frame in a predictable manner. Color creates a dynamic rhythm or a balance. Depth of field (the area of sharp focus in the image) tells the viewer what is important in the image—where it is that the eye should settle. Of course, even the positioning of the various elements in the scene (the subject, image color, points of strong tonal contrast, and more) help to establish impact.

Unlike other packaging titles, which simply provide templates to copy, this book enables designers of all packaging types to create 3-D packaging forms that are specific to their needs rather than based on an existing design. It teaches a simple net construction system a one-piece 2-D configuration of card seen when a 3-D package is opened out and flattened which enables the designer to create a huge number of very strong 3-D packaging forms that are both practical and imaginative. Each chapter concludes with photographs and net drawings of 610 creative examples of packaging designs made using the principles outlined in the preceding chapter. Structural Packaging gives the reader an understanding of the underlying principles of packaging construction and the technical knowledge and confidence to develop a greater number of their own unusual and innovative designs than any comparable book.

I've gotten a lot of requests the past few years to make a keepsake, a compilation if you will, of the favorites from the blog. It’s easy to miss a blog post—anyone’s post—because the rush of day-to-day life intercedes. This book gives me a chance to put some favorite posts together in one place, and to collect a lot of thoughts, feelings, and lessons into something coherent. It’s humorous, educational, and most of all, real. Editing for this book was like editing pictures. You pick the ones that resonate, have the potential for memory, and possess some sort of emotional or stylistic connection.

Thom Rouse seems to have an unbridled artistic sensibility. In this book, he offers up for review sixty of his favorite fine-art images. Rouse takes photographers behind the scenes of his creative process, showing the starting point—always a portrait, captured by him—and then details the Photoshop tools and techniques he used and, sometimes, some “accessory” images that he adds into the mix, to create a dramatically different work of art. While the components and tone of each image vary from page to page, Rouse strictly maintains that his creative process is based on the idea that each work of art must, at its core, remain photographic. In other words, his fine-art works are enhanced, stylized portraits that transcend the limits typically self-imposed by portrait artists. His goal in creating the book is to educate and inspire other photographers—or, in the words of the artist—to “show you something you haven’t seen before.”
