Inkscape is a free vector design tool, in my opinion, it has a very intuitive pen tool.
in any case, most of the stuff I teach can be done using illustrator or photoshop (it also has a pen tool and boolean operations). my workflow is not standard but it's lazy optimized, meaning if your lazy like me it's perfect for you. good luck.
