Still life studies are a great way to improve observational drawing skills and grow in confidence with your drawing. Drawing from life is always preferable to drawing from a photo when possible as photos tend to "flatten" the subject. Regular small studies of everyday objects really train your eyes to properly look at your subject. They can make very nice artwork to frame or illustrations to accompany a blog etc.
