I have taught you how to make seamless repeat patterns in Procreate before, but this is something new. I love making unusual patterns, and in my Adobe Illustrator classes I have taught how to create a scallop repeat pattern. This is a classic pattern type and once you break it down, it is not too difficult to accomplish. I will show you a bunch of examples to help you think about what you might like to sketch out. I will start the design here. I will show you my ideas for sketching out the scallop.Lesson 2: Creating the Scallop TemplateIn this lesson, I will break down the complete process of creating the template. With the steps I suggest, you will find it quite do-able. We will incorporate the sketch from the last lesson, and we will talk about the color palette.Lesson 3: Painting the Reflected FlowersIn this lesson, I will explain the techniques I used for painting the flowers. I explain my choices and show you how to keep the illustration consistent. Refer to any reference you gathered at this stage.Lesson 4: Painting the Leaves and DetailsWe will draw the leaves in this lesson. I will also teach you a very simple technique for adding detail to both the flowers and the leaves. Adding the details really helps you flesh out the design. I always find there is a first for everything and that it informs my choices for future designs in this style. You will learn very quickly what works and what doesn’t.Lesson 5: Testing Out the RepeatIn this lesson, all the motifs will be finished. At this point, I will show you all the ins and outs of creating a perfect repeat of the pattern. There is much to discuss as we go through the process.Lesson 6: Adjustments and Additional DetailsThis lesson will show you about adjustments and additional details. I take the to “art direct” myself. This is the point at which you take a look at multiple repeats of the pattern and critique it. What can be done to improve your design? I show you the adjustments I make.Lesson 7: Conclusion, Final Looks and Wrap UpIn this lesson we debrief, and I show you a few other designs and design choices. Take the to do a good sketch, referring to any reference you may have gathered. Paint the pattern on your new scallop template. Do a test to see if it works. Squint your eyes to see if something dominates and needs to be adjusted. Make final adjustments and then show what you have created on a mock-up.
